A friendlier front door
Hugging Face’s October 13 post introduces Llama Windows, a free, open-source Windows 11 app that manages llama.cpp from the notification area. Its model panel supports downloading quantized models from the Hub, loading or unloading them and opening a web interface for chat.
The release also exposes a local server for compatible clients and provides settings for private or gated repositories. Those capabilities are not a guarantee that every model fits every computer, or that every app connected to the server shares the same data practices. We have not installed or benchmarked it.

Give the first session one job
Our suggested first experiment is deliberately small: ask a loaded model to turn a fictional packing list into three categories. Avoid private documents, additional agents and external tools. Write down the model identifier and where you entered the prompt.
Before asking anything more, find the controls for loading, unloading and exiting. Notice the difference between closing a browser tab and ending the runtime. A desktop tool that lives in the tray deserves a deliberate stopping habit; a disappearing window is not, by itself, an explanation of what is still running.
If you prefer a separate pointer for navigating the model panel and chat, the Logitech Mobi Fold mouse (affiliate link) is an optional portable Bluetooth choice; Logitech lists support across several operating systems, including Windows. An existing mouse or trackpad does the same navigation job, and neither changes the model’s capabilities.

Record the result, including the stop
After the fictional task, note whether the output followed the categories you requested. Then unload the model and exit through the app’s controls. On the next session, confirm which model is loaded rather than assuming the previous choice persisted.
This is a proposed familiarization routine, not a claim that we observed a lifecycle bug. The payoff is simple: you can describe what you ran, what you asked and how you ended it. That is a better starting point for local AI than a collection of downloaded models whose role you cannot explain.
Try this, then make it yours.
For a first local-model session, use only invented data. Record the model name, one expected behavior and the steps you used to unload and exit.
