More AI training text is coming for Indian languages. Quantity is only the start.

NVIDIA and AI4Bharat describe a forthcoming multilingual corpus and generation pipeline, with important limits on what translated data can represent.

An announcement, not a download promise

On October 16, NVIDIA and AI4Bharat at IIT Madras described Nemotron-pretraining-Indic-v1: approximately 2.8 trillion tokens across 22 Indian languages, with romanized text for twelve. The post says the corpus is releasing soon, so this is not confirmation that the complete dataset is downloadable today.

The announcement describes a pipeline for translating curated source material, assessing quality, and repairing candidates. Its limitations section also stresses that translated material cannot replace naturally authored text or guarantee local cultural coverage. Those distinctions matter as much as the headline size.

Ask which kind of language success you mean

Imagine a student group creating an explanation of a technical project in more than one language. Getting the vocabulary right is one question. Preserving an equation is another. Sounding natural to the intended audience is a third. Our recommendation is to give those questions separate spaces in a review note.

Do not ask a reviewer only whether the text is good. Ask what it says, which terms feel misplaced, and whether a reader could mistake an example for a general rule. Let reviewers identify a problem in their own words instead of forcing every concern into one score.

This is a proposed review exercise, not a test of the forthcoming corpus. It can help a creator think about multilingual quality without training anything or downloading a large dataset.

Keep room for local knowledge

For a manageable exercise, use a short passage you wrote yourself and have permission to process. Include one ordinary explanation and one context-dependent example. Ask a willing fluent reader to mark what works and what needs another version; avoid high-stakes medical, legal, or emergency text.

If you cannot find someone qualified to check a language, label that part of the review as unfinished. Translation confidence should not come from how smoothly a version reads to someone who cannot evaluate it.

The encouraging part of this announcement is the prospect of more material and an inspectable process. A useful next question remains specific: does the resulting system serve the people and contexts you have in mind?

YOUR NEXT MOVE

Try this, then make it yours.

For one short multilingual project, write three review questions before generating a translation: meaning, technical details, and audience fit.
