A smaller jump from error to explanation
GitHub’s October 10 update adds a Fix action to diagnostic intention menus in Copilot for JetBrains. It opens inline chat to request a repair, using agent mode when available and ask mode otherwise. The release also adds control over automatic MCP server startup. GitHub says the plugin now requires JetBrains IDE 2025.2 or later. Those are documented release details; we have not tested the update ourselves.

Our take: use the shortcut to understand the mistake
An error message can make a beginner feel stuck before the interesting part of a project even starts. Bringing that message directly into an AI conversation could make the next step easier to find. Our advice is to treat the proposed change as a small lesson you can inspect. Ask what caused the error, why the repair addresses it, and which assumption might still be wrong.
For a personal portfolio app, imagine a function that crashes when a list is empty. A useful explanation should connect the crash to the missing case. You should be able to point to the changed lines and explain their job without borrowing the assistant’s wording. If the fix rewrites half your app, narrow the request before accepting it.
Try a ten-minute repair challenge
Use a disposable project with no private data. Create one obvious bug, such as accessing the first item of an empty list, and ask for a minimal repair plus a plain-language explanation. Inspect the diff before applying it. Run the example with an empty list, a single item, and several items.
Then deliberately change the input again and predict what should happen before running it. This is our suggested learning exercise, not an official GitHub tutorial. The win is being able to explain a small working change yourself. Save that explanation alongside the test cases; next time you see a similar diagnostic, you have a reference built from something you actually checked.
Try this, then make it yours.
Try one deliberately broken function, inspect the smallest proposed diff, and test three input cases.
