Claude’s new small model wants the boring part of your workload

Haiku 5.5 is built for quick, repeatable jobs. That could matter more than another chatbot flex.

The actual update

Anthropic released Claude Haiku 5.5 on October 7, positioning it for high-volume tasks such as classification, summaries, database questions, and narrowly scoped work inside larger coding projects. The company says it is its fastest standard-speed model and reports lower running costs than Haiku 4.5. Haiku also gains an adjustable effort setting. The launch announcement lists availability through Anthropic’s platform, AWS, Google Cloud, and Microsoft Azure. These are the company’s claims and release details, rather than results from our own testing.

Our take: think assembly line

Imagine building a student club newsletter. One step sorts submissions by topic, another checks whether an event has a date, and a final step drafts the page. Our practical read is that the first two jobs are better candidates for a small model than asking it to run the entire publication. The useful question is whether it reliably finishes a limited task with less waiting and expense. A cheaper response that requires three repairs may cost more than one good response from another model. Measure the complete workflow.

Try one contained experiment

Take ten invented event submissions and ask your current model to return the title, date, location, and any missing information in a consistent format. If you already have suitable access, repeat with Haiku. Score the answers against the original submissions, especially blanks it incorrectly fills in. Log latency and actual billed usage instead of relying on a headline percentage. Keep the winning setup only if the output meets your standard. There is no need to buy a new subscription just to discover whether this particular experiment saves you time.
